Bee’s Picks – Design Trends for 2019

It’s never too late to set new design goals to renew and refresh your home.  This does not mean you must start from scratch;  just add some updates to transform a room and uplift spirits without breaking the bank. On the other hand, if you want, go for it and transform an entire room! Get rid of your fussy Kirkland accents and update your space.  Here are my top 10 picks for design trends that are perfect to incorporate into one of the homes built by Birmingham home builder, Scotch Homes.

  •  Gallery Walls

Although this has always been a favorite design element of mine, I love seeing it becoming even more of a design trend.  Take your old tired oils and add in some modern prints, photos, and canvases.  If you like a more structured gallery, take your family photos and gold frames from Target (so affordable and look great) and create a picture gallery.

  • Linear Fireplaces  — Inside or Outside

What a great way to update a room or your outdoor space!  Linear fireplaces add a touch of modern, mixed with a transitional look. They can be added in almost any space and new technology makes even the electric versions look good.

  • Velvet – YUM!

Gone is the all white linen room.  Add some POP with a velvet sofa or velvet chairs or even some luxe throw pillows — Set To Sell design staples!  Pick a neutral color in dark gray, navy, dark forest green, or burnt orange in yummy velvet, adding a luxe design element to any room.

  • Modern Lighting

It’s time to get rid of your old dark chandelier. Light, airy, modern fixtures will transform          your traditional dining, breakfast or living room. Even your foyer can use a facelift!

  • Layering Rugs — The Trend Continues

We have seen rug layering in the past few years and will continue to see this trend in 2019.  We love to add a cowhide or a pattern over a sisal.

  • Wallpaper – The New Shiplap?

Instead of wrapping your house in shiplap try adding some wallpaper! Fun geometric designs and florals are trending for accent walls, powder rooms, nooks and even as a backsplash. Try some, you might like it!

  • The Modern Mix – Traditional Meets Modern

At Set To Sell, we have been on trend stylemakers with our transitional style for years.  It’s time to update your space with touches of modern mixed in with your traditional style.  We do love our traditional – we are in the South for goodness sake!.  But it is time to refresh. My very favorite design style might be considered eclectic. Being from New Orleans, I have an intense love for antiques and family pieces.  MIX, MIX, MIX!  Adding modern accents will transform your traditional pieces and give your room life.

  • Paint Colors

What transforms a space more than a coat of fresh paint! Choosing the right color is always hard because tones and undertones are extremely difficult to get right. We’re still seeing the trend to lighter walls and slightly warmer gray. Color trends are usually in 10-year cycles and the 10-year gray, gray, gray trend is coming to an end. However, the warm taupe grays that Set To Sell has been using are so neutral they are timeless! I like to keep my walls neutral as well as my investment pieces and add color with pillows, accessories and accents. On the other hand, powder rooms, libraries, accent walls and accent furniture/built-ins are great places to use bold new color trends. If you are unsure and need help please call us for a paint consultation!

  • Kitchen Updates — Granite Is Out!

Granite has definitely seen the end of its glory days. Quartz has been sneaking onto the scene for many years and finally has made the transition to the material of choice over granite.  Marble is my personal favorite natural stone, but you truly have to love marble as it is a porous product and harder to maintain – definitely have it professionally sealed. Hone, Hone, Hone! Matte finishes are in and the design trend this year will be to mix countertop materials. I also love concrete, soapstone, wood, limestone and yes, even the new Corian (see Amanda’s powder room redo below). White kitchens have been on trend for several years and are always a timeless choice, but the trend of mixing cabinet finishes and countertops adds texture and warmth.

  • Metal Mixing Continues for 2019

You don’t have to limit yourself to one metal finish in any room. Set To Sell has again been on trend with this style for many years and this mix was used extensively in selections for the 2018 Parade of Homes Ideal House. DO NOT BE AFRAID to mix this up!

If you’re making the leap to purchase a brand new home from Birmingham home builder Scotch Homes, you have a great opportunity to create a home that is stylish and comforting. Incorporate any of these design trends with your own favorite design style for a beautiful and unique home.

Client Testimonials

We had a wonderful experience having our home built by Wayne Scotch and the Scotch Homes Team. They were very patient in helping us get ready to start the project and even helped us find the perfect location. He was always available to help us through each step and to explain everything. Wayne's wife, Stefani, works hard behind the scenes to make sure that orders are placed and deadlines are met. She is also available to answer questions and to make recommendations! We felt that our house was always of the utmost importance to Wayne and his team! Now that the house is finished, we are so glad that we had Scotch Homes do the building. The quality and workmanship in our home is very obvious. Wayne and the entire Scotch Homes team are extremely honest, caring people and their Christian concern is a huge part of their business. There could not be a better company or a better builder anywhere than Scotch Homes. We recommend them highly and we are very grateful that we found them!Jim and Maria Brandt
After living in the same home for 28+ years, we decided to build a home. We feel so fortunate to have contracted with Scotch Homes and Land Development for the project. Scotch Homes listened to what we wanted in our new home, provided house plans that met our needs and made wonderful suggestions throughout the building process. We were amazed at the progress each day when we visited the construction site. Scotch Homes constructed a quality built home that we love, in a very convenient location on a great lot! Their team provided us with contacts for selections of our lighting, flooring, etc, emailed me when selections were due, and provided a valued opinion about selections when I asked for her help. Not only are we thankful that Scotch Homes built our home, we also are blessed to now call them our friends.

From the moment we met with Scotch Homes, they listened to all the different things we wanted to include into our new home. They discussed every step. The budgets we had for brick, lighting , flooring and even the landscaping were generous enough that I could stay in budget and not go over.

Besides being a great builder Scotch Homes is a great company that takes pride in their work. I recommend Scotch Homes to everyone I meet. If you have thought about building a home with Scotch Homes ,I promise, you will have a wonderful time!
